Longwood Fire Update: Sanctuary Infrastructure and Resources Lost

Updated 23 January 2026

It has been two weeks since the Longwood bushfire tore through our region and devastated Gunyah Animal Healing Sanctuary. This has been the most challenging period in the sanctuary’s history. While much has been lost, our commitment to Kathy and the animals has never wavered. These weeks have been marked by grief and exhaustion, but also by resilience and an unwavering determination to rebuild.

In the immediate aftermath, we were incredibly relieved that almost all of the animals survived the fire. Tragically, following veterinary assessments, one of our beloved cows, Lennie — our gentle big boy — had suffered burn injuries he would not have been able to recover from. With heavy hearts, the decision was made to end his suffering. He was deeply loved and is dearly missed. Amid this loss, there was also relief when the three ponies who were initially missing were located and safely reunited with Kathy, bringing comfort after days of uncertainty.

The animals are now adjusting to life after the fire. With large areas of the property no longer usable, many residents are sharing spaces for the first time. While this has come with some strong opinions from those used to having their own paddocks, everyone is calm, safe, and having their basic needs met — food, water, shelter, and care.

Extraordinary community support has helped stabilise the sanctuary through the immediate aftermath, providing essential assistance and resources when they were needed most. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has shown up, quietly and generously, to help carry Gunyah through this crisis.

Now begins the long journey of recovery and rebuilding. Our goal is not only to restore what was lost, but to build a stronger, more resilient sanctuary for the animals who depend on it. If you are able to donate, share our story, or support us in any way, you are helping ensure Gunyah can continue to be a place of healing and safety.

Thank you for standing with Gunyah, for caring for the animals, and for giving us hope for what lies ahead.

If you are in the area and can assist with animal feed, water supply solutions or fencing, please contact Brenton on 0403 515 683, or send a message via the Message button on the Gunyah Facebook page, or email us here
