Things are about to get even busier at Gunyah, as a number of planned medical checkups and procedures need to take place over the coming weeks.

All the horses and ponies will undergo their annual dentals. Our equine friends have teeth that continually grow throughout their lifetime. Some natural wear occurs as they chew food etc, but sharp hooks can form if we don’t help them out with regular dentals.

If left unchecked, numerous health issues can arise from neglected teeth leading to weight loss, pain, behavioural changes, damage to gums, periodontal disease, just to name a few. In really bad cases, dental issues can lead to severe emaciation and even death.

While Cooper and Abbey are under sedation having their dentals, they will also have other health issues checked and treated if and where relevant. (Keep reading below)

Cooper has two melanomas which need to be re-assessed for changes and movement since the last examination.

Abbey has a small growth on her left third eyelid which is causing her eye to weep. This needs to be assessed and treated. She has had eye ointment to date to help with swelling and pain, but a closer inspection under sedation and a more suitable treatment plan needs to be looked into.

Ruby also needs to have a dental, and she will need to have teeth extracted.

Kurt the sheep is going to need to have some work done to his front feet which are causing him some issues. One hoof has a nasty split in it. Kurt’s hoof will be trimmed, and we will be assessing whether we can add a synthetic section to give the foot more strength and stability as the hoof slowly heals.

All this medical work will not be cheap, and the early estimate is going to be at least $3,500. Your help with this, as always, is greatly appreciated. Without public support, Gunyah could not continue to save and enhance the lives of animals in need.
